New Jersey is in the Middle Atlantic region of the US. It is nicknamed the Garden State.
New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the US. Most live north of Trenton near New York City (NYC).
The only land boundary is NY to the north. To the east lies the Atlantic Ocean, the rest is bounded by rivers and bays. The state is about 170 miles north to south and about 75 miles east to west.
Plants common to the state are: rhododendron, azalea, mountain laurel, honeysuckle, wintergreen and cardinal flower. Varieties of pine and white cedar trees grow in South Jersey.
The first settlers to the area were English, Scots, Swedes and Dutch. The first settlements were trading posts along the Hudson and Delaware Rivers.
December 1787, New Jersey became the 3rd state to Ratify the constitution. Delaware was the first.
In 1790, Trenton officially became the state capital of New Jersey.
